Check back for the 2021-22 Boys Basketball schedule.
It's hard to believe, but it's already time to think about cheerleading for the 2021-22 school year! Coach Brauns put together information below on what a typical season is like. Open gyms start soon, so make sure you sign up if you are interested!
The 2019-20 GJHS Cheerleaders are pictured above. Front row (L to R): Jaidyn Lile and Holly Dunn. Second row (L to R): Lola Carman, Sidney Griffin, and Adriana Lohman. Third row (L to R): Unique McClain, Payten Suzuki, Jolie Macon, Head Coach Gayla Brauns, Aubrie Hessenauer, Ziairah White, and Chloe Eyman.
Blue Jay cheerleaders attend and cheer at the Boys Basketball games. They also attend several competitions during November, December, and January, hosted by the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association. Since the team began competing during the 2009-2010 season, the Blue Jays have qualified for the state competition each year!
The 2019-20 Cheer Jays had a strong season, winning the Waterloo and Alton Invitationals and qualifying for championships in January. This year they also hosted an NCA stunt camp and the annual Blue Jay 5K. A slideshow of pictures from this season is on the right.
Fifth in State!!
On Sunday, January 6, the Blue Jay cheerleaders attended the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championship competition and received 5th place in the Small Junior High division! This is the second consecutive year with a top 5 finish for the team. There were 27 teams in the same division as Greenville, all of whom had to have previously qualified for the state championships at an invitational competition. The Blue Jays qualified at their first invitational of the season in Alton in November, where they took home a first place trophy. The team also competed at invitationals in Mt. Vernon (third place), Highland (fifth place), and Edwardsville (third place) this year. They had a strong finish to their competitive season, winning first place at the Mater Dei Invitational on January 20. Pictures from competitions this season are on the left, and a video of the state routine is below. Congratulations to the cheerleaders and coaches on a great season!
Have you ever wondered what goes into a cheerleading "routine"? The short answer - a lot! The routine can be a maximum of 3 minutes long. There is a music portion and a cheer portion. The music cannot be longer than a minute and a half. During the routine, the girls are judged on stunting, tumbling, pyramids, motions, voices, dancing, transitions, formations, and many other things. Hours and hours of practice go into making one routine work, and any small changes affect the entire routine. The cheerleaders and coaches work very hard throughout the year to make the routine as good as it can possibly be! A video of the routine from the 2019 ICCA State Championships in on the right!
